Happy New Year- Dr. Dr. Give me the News

January19

Dr. Dr. Give me the News!

We just started our project, Doctor, Doctor give me the News! It’s one of our teams favorite projects to teach and the kids LOVE it.

This year our entry event will be different than anything we’ve ever done before. We’ve partnered with Morgridge Academy at the National Jewish hospital. Our students will be working to diagnose a student that attends Morgridge Academy.  Of course the student at Morgridge has already been diagnosed and works with a team of medical professionals, but we thought it would give our students some real world perspective to actually “diagnose” a patient that is also a student. Students have to come up with the correct diagnosis, treatment plan and then present their findings to a panel of medical professionals. Students from Sage Canyon will also take a field trip to the Morgridge Academy after the project has been completed to meet their patients in real life. We’ll take a tour, meet the students, doctors and nurses who work with these children on a daily basis.

These students that we’ll be working with have chronic illnesses and our hope is that our students walk away with not only knowledge of body systems and chronic illnesses but empathy for others as well.

What Are We Reading?

This book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, is a book about a Japanese girl who loves to run. But one day she is diagnosed with Leukemia. This disease comes from the atom bomb dropped on Japan when she was only an infant. Sadako wanted to make the Jr. high running team, but now there will be no chance. Will Sadako survive? The biggest race in Sadako’s life would race against life or death.

Field Trips ~Brittany

We are going to take a field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science to dissect lungs and explore Expedition Health. It will be on Wednesday, the 21st of January. **Remember to pack a disposable lunch so you wont have to carry it around all day.

We also had an in school field trip on Monday, a Respiratory Therapist from Swedish Hospital named Mrs. Chaput came in and showed us a lot about the lungs. She brung in two pig hearts, one was from a normal healthy pig the other one was from a pig that was exposed to smoke for a long period of time. We learned so much!

Dr. Dr. Give Me The News:

In our new project, Dr. Dr Give Me The News, we will learn about all different types of human body systems. We started by learning about the vascular system in plants. We got some flowers and celery, and put them in colored water and left them there for a while.  They are changing colors before our eyes! We are going to do two dissections, lungs at the field trip and lambs hearts at school! I think this will be the best project ever!

This week we are learning about the Circulatory System and the Respiratory System. The Circulatory System moves nutrients to the cells of your body to feed them and help them fight disease, the main parts of the circulatory are the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The Respiratory System supplies the blood with oxygen so the blood can deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The Respiratory System does this by inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. Respiration is achieved through the mouth, nose, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm.

PBL Groups:

In PBL (Dr.Dr. Give Me The News) We have five groups from four people, to six people in it. We got to choose one partner and then Mrs. McGuckin joined those pairs together. After that, we got to choose where we can put our desks and joined it together with our groups. We love getting to choose where we sit in our classroom. It also helps to be sitting with our group members.
